BIOGRAPHY

  • Phillip Gardner was born in San Angelo, Texas, the son of Martha and Girvous O. Gardner. He attended schools in Midland and graduated from Midland High School, Class of 1966.
  • Phillip moved to Odessa to live with a sister and to work. He drafted into the Army from Odessa in February 1968. He completed basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas and infantry AIT at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He departed for Vietnam on August 30, 1968, and was assigned to D Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, 198th Light Infantry Brigade who were under the operational control of the 23rd (Americal) Division.
  • Phillip had been hospitalized in Vietnam for pneumonia and had just returned to the field 10 days earlier and he was wounded by an explosive device on June 5th, 1969, while on patrol. He was medevac'd and died from his wounds, June 6th, 1969.
  • Phillip was buried with full military honors at the Fairview Cemetery in Midland, Tx. He was survived by his parents and siblings; brothers, Dennis and Roger and sisters; Judith, Sarah and Nancy.
