BIOGRAPHY

  • Edgar was born in Clifton, Bosque County, Texas. He was the son of Vinnie Hawkins and Ed Davis. His mother died a week after his birth. The family moved to Odessa in 1954 and Ed attended Odessa schools. His father moved to Del Rio in 1957 and Ed stayed with family in Odessa. He attended Odessa High School through his junior year when he dropped out in the summer of 1960. He worked in the oilfields around Odessa until he enlisted in the Marine Corp November 30, 1965. He trained in San Diego, California, Camp Pendleton, California. He trained as a artilleryman.
  • He married Cathaleen Brown, a 1963 Odessa High School graduate in Odessa on April 13, 1966. Shortly thereafter, he left for Okinawa for staging and further training. He began his tour in Vietnam on September 30, 1966, when his battery mobilized to Vietnam. He was assigned to Battery F, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, First Marine Division. The Battery supported the 5th Marine Regiment. His unit was constantly being harassed by mortars and rockets and sniper fire being fired into their area of operation. On September 6, 1967 and about two weeks before the end of this tour, he was driving a truck and he drove over a land mine. He was killed by the explosion with fragmentation wounds to the head and upper body.
  • He was buried with full military honors in the Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Del Rio, Texas. He was survived by his wife Cathaleen who was residing near Camp Pendleton in California. He was also survived by his father, Lee Davis of Del Rio, Texas, his sisters; Mrs. James Nixon and Mrs. Evan Carraway, both of Odessa; Mrs. Dan Durham of Lubbock and Mrs. Eugene Fletcher of Brownwood; his brothers, Ben and Wilson of Houston and Henry of Big Lake.
