BIOGRAPHY

  • Oscar was born in San Angelo to the union of Obdulia Morin Reina and Manuel Basturdo Juarez. He was the oldest of five. He attended San Angelo schools, last attending San Angelo Central High School in the spring of 1967 after his junior year. He played J.V. Football at San Angelo Central High and was in the Key Club.
  • At the beginning of his senior year, he enlisted in the Marine Corp in September 1967 the day after his 18th birthday. He completed Marine Recruit Training at the Marine Recruit Training Depot, San Diego, California. He completed ITR at Camp Pendleton, California and then received further training at Thousand Palms, California as a tank crewman.
  • He began his tour in Vietnam on May 20, 1968, while staging with the 27th Marine Regiment in Okinawa. He was assigned to I Company, 3rd Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. According to the 3rd Bn, 27th Marines Command Chronology for June 28, 1968, the 4th man in line in a foot patrol detonated a booby trap believed to have been made from a dud 155mm shell. The explosion killed two men and wounded several others. The dead were HM3 George L. Myers of Chicago, Illinois, and Pfc Oscar R. Juarez of San Angelo, Texas. PFC Juarez had been in Vietnam a little over a month.
  • He was buried with full military honors in the Calvary Cemetery in San Angelo, Texas. He was survived by his parents and a brother, Abel and sisters: Sylvia, Cynthia and Mario all of the home in San Angelo.
