BIOGRAPHY

  • Raymond Tanner was born in Lubbock, Texas the son of Tebah Wanda Martin and John Orville Tanner. He grew up in Lubbock, Texas. He also lived in Midland and attended Midland schools. Raymond intered the the U.S. Army in 1960. He trained as a medic at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
  • Specialist Tanner had served in various stateside bases and also served in Germany as a medic to a Nikie base from 1960 to 1963. He did his first tour in Vietnam in 1966 with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. His second tour was with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division in 1967. He was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service with the 27th Infantry Regiment and a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service with the 3rd Brigade. He was also awarded an Army Commendations Medal.
  • He began his third tour with HHC, 1st Battalion, 5th Mechanized Regiment, 25th Infantry, on June 12, 1968. He was wounded by shrapnel in early August 1968 and rejoined the unit in early October. He was operating as a medic with B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Mechanized Regiment (Bobcats) on October 27, 1968, when the APC he was riding on detonated an AT mine. He was killed and five others were injured. The APC was damaged beyond repair.
  • He was buried with full military honors in Lubbock, Texas. He was awarded a third Bronze Star and his second purple heart, posthumously. At the time of his death, he was engaged to Mary Chinn of Bellville, Illinois. His mother and older brother survived him.
