BIOGRAPHY

Raul "Rudy" Lerma Segovai was born in Midland, Texas to Celia Lerma and Ramon Lujan Segovia. He was the oldest child of four. He attended Midland Schools and was a 1966 graduate of Midland High School. He attended Commercial College of Midland after high school.
He was drafted into the Army in April 1968 and completed basic and AIT at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He began his tour in Vietnam on September 9, 1968. He was assigned as an infantryman with B Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division.
The first platoon of B Company, 3/8 Infantry was set up in a platoon sized perimeter at approximately 2345hours on 19 January 1969. A soldier on duty as a part of the sentinel suddenly heard movement about 5 meters away from him which was on the edge of their perimeter. He looked in that direction and saw what he thought in the darkness was someone falling down. Not know if it was friend or not, he pointed his weapon in that general direction, but the movement had stopped and there was nothing there. He alerted everyone and it was immediately found that specialist Segovia was missing. . His poncho liner was found about 5 meters out of the of the perimeter and a trail that appeared to be made an animal. A patrol was quickly organized and followed up the trail following drops and puddles of blood with the aid of flashlights. There were also marks up the trail where the body had been dragged. Ater following the trail approximately 50-60 meters, the body of SP/4 Segovia was discovered.
Specialist Segovia was buried with full military honors at the Fairview Cemetery in Midland, Texas. He was survived by his parents, his sister, Mary Helen and brothers, Bobby and Israel. His father passed away in 1989 and is buried near Rudy in the Veteran's Section of Fairview Cemetery. His brother Bobby passed away in 2009. His sister lives in San Antonio and his mother now lives with Israel and wife in Wylie, Texas.
