BIOGRAPHY

  • Danny was the son of Chon O. Flores and Beatriz Porras Flores. He was born in Valentine, Texas and was delivered by his grandmother, Concha Flores. A sister later joined the family. His father died when Daniel was growing up. Known as "Danny" to his friends, U.S. Army Cpl. Daniel P. Flores grew up in Valentine, Texas, a small West Texas ranching community and former railroad switching station.
  • He spent his childhood in the village (Population: 420 at the time), doing all the things that "small town" guys do, riding bicycles, playing marbles and hide and seek, swimming in the stock tanks, and later cruising U.S. 90 and the backroads in search of another adventure. Danny Flores loved horses and the cowboy life, a passion he inherited from the Porras side of his family.
  • He excelled in basketball and football at school and was one of three males among the seven graduates in the Valentine High School Class of 1966. Danny briefly attended Sul Ross State College in Alpine, where he intended to study range animal science before the Vietnam War interrupted his studies.
  • Danny was drafted and inducted into the Army, April 1, 1968 in El Paso, Texas. He completed basic training and infantry AIT at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He began his tour in Vietnam on August 27, 1968 and was assigned as an infantryman with E Troop, 11th Infantry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Americal Division. Daniel was killed November 27, 1968, as he was driving an ammunition vehicle that hit a land mine.
  • Danny was buried with full military honors in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Valentine, Texas. He received a posthumous promotion to Corporal. He was survived by his mother, his sister Victorina Mendez of Germany, grandparents, his fiancée, Lupita Corral of Van Horn, Mr. and Mrs. Severo Porras and close relatives Mr. and Mrs. Lucas Sanchez, all of Valentine.
  • His mother now lives in San Antonio, Texas. Danny's sister, Victorina Mendez, died a few years after he was buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Valentine.
