BIOGRAPHY

  • Dean Moore was a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Army from Big Spring, Texas. He was born in Falls, Texas, the son of Madge Ingram and Henry M. Moore. He had served during the Korean War and re-joined the Army in 1960 after a 10-year break. He was an ordinance specialist. His name is listed as Dean Moore on all of his military records
  • He began his tour in Vietnam on April 28, 1967. He and another soldier, Specialist 6 Paul B. McKinley of Copperas Cove, Texas were killed on November 22, 1967. they were assigned to the 191st Ordnance Battalion (Ammunition), Explosive Disposal Section, 54th General Support Group, Army Support Command Cam Ranh Bay, 1st Logistical Command, Cam Ranh Bay in the Khanh Hoa Province. Specialist Moore and Specialist McKinley (the driver) were enroute to an incident at Thien Giao north of Phan Thiet, Binh Thuan Province, Republic of Vietnam. A Special Forces camp had been mortared the night before. They were five miles north of Phan Thiet on Highway 8 and had just passed over a bridge onto a narrow stretch of gravel road when a command-detonated mine detonated beneath their "¼-ton" jeep, killing them instantly. The mine consisted of a U.S. 105mm projectile. The road was unsecured but was heavily traveled. It was felt by those investigate the incident that the attack was not directed directly against Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel. SP5 Moore was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for his activities in Vietnam and the Purple Heart Medal.
  • He was buried with full military honors in the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas. He was survived by his wife, Martha J. Moore of Battle Creek, Michigan and his father, Henry N. Moore of Big Spring.
