BIOGRAPHY

  • Terry was born in Big Spring, Texas, the youngest son of Edna Inez Smith and Terrill J. Kinman. He had five older brothers and sisters. He attended Big Spring schools and last attended Big Spring High School. He dropped out and enlisted in the Army in Oakland, California on December 7, 1967, while visiting one of his sisters
  • He completed basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and cook school at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He had served at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and also at Nelligen Barracks in Germany until July 29, 1970, when he came home on emergency leave when his mother died. He started his tour in Vietnam on October 16, 1970, and was assigned as a senior cook for the 180th Assault Helicopter Company, 268th Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Brigade.
  • He was found unresponsive in his bed on December 4, 1970, when he was due to report for his duties. A medic was summoned, and he was taken to 8th Evac Military hospital where he was pronounced dead. The causes of death after autopsy were listed as pulmonary congestion and edema with aspiration of gastric contents. The exact cause was unknown. He was buried with full military honors at the Mount Olive Cemetery in Big Spring, Texas. He was survived by his father of Big Spring, his brothers, Carroll and Don, also of Big Spring, by his sisters, Mrs. J.R. Hill of Selma, Alabama, Mrs. Ray Phillips of Suisun, California and Mrs. Dave Orstrander of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
