BIOGRAPHY

  • John Peter Barley was born in Findlay, Ohio, the son of Martha Miller and John Bartley. He enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a part of the concerted effort to develop pilots for the U.S. Air Force. He completed flight training in 1955 as a member of the 55-I Class at Goodfellow AFB and was commissioned a 2 LT, he married Betty Jane Cameron of San Angelo, Texas. He and Betty were the parents of two children, Diane born in 1955 and John Michel in 1957, both born in Waco. He completed the requirements for his BS degree in electrical engineering at Purdue University in 1959. He further trained as a pilot with the A/B 26, which was a light bomber.
  • He completed special training at Luke Air Force Base before beginning his tour in Vietnam in 1962. His wife was living with her parents in San Angelo while Captain Bartley was in Vietnam. He was assigned to Detachment 2A, First Air Command, 2nd Air Division, 13th Air Force. The detachment was initially assigned to Clark Air Force Base Philippines, then was assigned to Ben Hoa Air Force Base. The group flew different types of aircraft, B-26's, T-28's and C-47's in support of the South Vietnamese. On February 3, 1963, B-26 tail number 44-35692 was shot down while conducting a strafing run against a Viet Cong unit in the Mekong Delta. All three crew members were killed in the crash. The crash site was located the next day and the bodies were located and removed.
  • Captain John Peter Bartley was buried with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. He was survived by his wife and daughter and son of San Angelo, Texas. He was also survived by his parents of Saulsbury, North Carolina, his brothers Stephen C., Jesse Eugene and John Edward Bartley and by his sister Martha Ann.
  • Bartley Street at Hurburt Field, Florida was named for Captain Barley. Hurburt Field is a part of the greater Eglin Air Force Base.
